Houston OBO Solutions Center.
The city’s Office of Business Opportunity Solutions Center offers no-cost services for aspiring and established business owners. Its resources include information on permits, licences, fee schedules, certification and business planning, plus referrals to other organisations.
Useful question to bring: “For this address and this business activity, which offices should I contact before opening?”

University of Houston SBDC Network.
The UH Texas Gulf Coast SBDC Network supports businesses across Southeast Texas, from the idea stage through growth and exit. Its website lists local centres, advising requests and free live or recorded webinars.
New clients register before meeting an advisor. Check the current process and whether a particular event or service has a fee before signing up; do not assume every offering is free.
Useful question to bring: “Can you help me identify the assumptions and gaps in my business plan?”

SCORE business mentors.
SCORE provides no-cost mentoring through volunteer business experts. The SBA’s resource-partner directory explains the service and helps you find an appropriate mentor.
Use mentoring to work through business planning, operations, financing questions or a decision you are facing. Confirm workshop fees separately from the free mentoring service.
Useful question to bring: “What should I test before committing money to this next step?”

SBA Houston District Office.
The Houston District Office provides information about SBA funding programs, counselling, federal contracting certifications and disaster recovery. It can connect businesses with lenders, partners and community groups.
Contact the office to arrange help and confirm the current appointment process. Program guidance does not mean a loan or other funding will be approved.

Prepare a one-page meeting brief.
- Summarise what the business does and who it serves.
- State its location and current stage.
- Identify the one decision or problem you want to discuss.
- List the options you have considered.
- Bring relevant figures or documents requested by the provider.
- Finish with agreed actions, owners and target dates.
You do not need a perfect business plan to ask a clear question. A concise brief helps the person advising you focus on the next useful step.
